The GreatFul Threads meeting for March began with acknowledging the accomplishments of our members. Vista Mahan was recently published in both Quilting Arts magazine and Lookout Alabama. Delores Dady will be in a showing at Reflections Gallery on Lee Highway, April 3-May 30. Jackie Cory will be teaching and demonstrating at Art Creations Sat. April 12. Feel free to contact each of them for more info.
Self Portrait 2014 rules:
1. 50% must be pieced or appliqued
2. Sleeve on back
3. size 11 X 14
4. Can be real, interpretive, or abstract
5. Due in October
Two more volunteers are needed for the Saturday, April 12 (1:00 - 3:00) project at Children's Discovery Museum. All blocks are cut and ready to go. Be planning what personal quilts you would like to hang at the CDM during the month of September. Note on your calendar the reception for that event will be Sept. 11, 6-7:30.
June Lay recommended reading Come Listen to my Quilt, written by Kristina Becker. Persephone's Creations is a local online store (www.persephonescreatons.com) with set retail hours. The store is located in Soddy Daisy. Hours are Monday 10-3, Wednesday 3-7, Friday 10-3, Saturday 10-5 and by appointment. Check it out.
Due to Josie not being at the meeting because of illness, there will be no photos on the blog this month.
I would like to encourage everyone to participate in our monthly program, you will only learn and increase your skill by doing. If you were not there this month, I will gladly pull techniques for you, just let me know.

Welcome to GreatFul Threads. We are an art quilting group located in the North Georgia/Chattanooga, Tennessee area. Our group is composed of 21 active members and we meet the 4th Thursday, January-October. Meetings are from 3:00 - 5:00 PM and are held at Bernina Sew and Quilt Studio located at 5950 Shallowford Road in Chattanooga. GreatFul Threads is open to anyone interested in art quilting.

March Meeting
This coming Thursday, March 27, is our GreatFul Threads monthly meeting. We have plenty of blocks cut to begin our CDM project so we do not have to meet early as we did last month. Bring your technique project for the program and if you have not started it yet, you still have plenty of time. If you were not there last month and need me to pull two techniques for you just give me a call and I will gladly do it over the phone (706.934.3761) As always, bring your show 'n tell.

Vista's in "Quilting Arts"
What a joy it is to share our members accomplishments. Vista Mahan is published in the current April/May edition of Quilting Arts magazine! She entered the mini prayer flag reader challenge and was 1 of 23 chosen to go into the magazine. Three cheers for Vista!!
I was going to send a post out about the magazine because this edition is featuring portrait quilts. How timely is this since our challenge for 2014 is a self portrait? If you do not have a subscription, you will want to pick up a copy at Hobby Lobby or Joann's. There were so many good ones submitted (and Vista's set was chosen from all of them) they have put together a downloadable eBook. I am assuming you can download this even if you do not have a subscription. Go to www.quiltingdaily.com. and look under the tab called Free Resources. Click Online Extras, next click Fly Your Flag.
The quality of the flags submitted is fantastic. Yea to Vista for standing with the best of them. I know you will want to see them and send her a note of congratulations.
I do hope everyone is thinking about what art quilts you would like to hang at the CDM in September. Our quilts, along with the two the children are making, will hang the entire month. Mark your calendars for the reception Thursday evening September 11 from 6:00 to 7:30. What fun to be there as a group and get to oooh and ahhh over our work! If you would like to make something special for the occasion, please do.

Member News
Thanks to everyone who has shown up at my house, individually or collectively, to work on the CDM project. We have made great progress. Several of you have taken fabric home to cut. Would you be so kind as to drop me a note and let me know exactly what blocks you have and how many you have cut?
Jackie Cory will have a booth at "Little Owl Arts and Music Festival" in Audubon Acres next Saturday, March 22, 11:00-6:00. Admittedly, I have never been to Audubon Acres although it is down the road from me. I am looking forward to going and checking out the nature sanctuary and supporting one of our extremely talented and productive members. Jackie gets more art accomplished in one month than I finish in a years time.
Jackie will also be teaching at a retreat sponsored by Hyder Hangout Quilt Store in Cleveland April 25-27 (Fri.-Sun.) The retreat takes place in Trenton, GA at Home Harvest Retreat. Two projects are being taught, a "Hydrangea Wall Hanging" and a "Small Paper Pieced Kimono". Cost is $160.00 which includes lodging, meals, snacks and classes. Call Susan Hyder at 423.715.2908 to sign up and get your supply list. If you have plenty of on going projects and need the retreat to finish them, you are welcome as well, call Susan to sign up. Fran, owner and hostess of Home Harvest, makes the most delicious cinnamon rolls you will ever eat. She is also the best at planning her meals around specific dietary requirements.

Art Quilt Guild February 2014

Sorry for the delay. Here is the pictures from our Guild Meeting in February. We had show and tell for completed projects, we showed the technique that we pulled at the previous months meeting and we spent some extra time preparing for upcoming quilting days at the childrens discovery museum. We will be helping the children to make quilt blocks for a quilt that will hang during AQS Week.

Re-cap of February 27 meeting
Thanks to all who attended the pre-meeting work session to prepare fabric for quilts to be made at the Children's Discovery Museum (CDM). We had 9 members selecting fabric, cutting blocks, fusing, drawing and cutting out shapes. Everyone was very generous with the fabric they brought and/or sent.
We made progress but not enough. Another meeting has been set up at my house next week on Friday, March 7, 10:00. We will finish preparing 80 ziplock bags of each block. Plan to stay through lunch and we'll order pizza. I will send address and directions through email to all members.
A sign up sheet was sent around. We need at least 6 volunteers to be at the CDM each time we are scheduled to be there Saturday April 12 and 19 and May 3 and 10. We only had two sign up for April 12 from 1:00 - 3:00. Please check your schedule and let me know if you are available that day. It will be best if we ride together, parking will be free but is limited.
Here are the rules for the Self Portrait 2014 Challenge:
1. 50 % must be pieced or appliqued (which means only 50% can be painted, if you so choose)
2. It must be a finished quilt size 11 X 14
3. It must have a hanging sleeve
4. The self portrait can be realistic, interpretive or abstract
5. Self Portrait Challenge due at October meeting
For those who wanted to check out the book catalog that Jackie had, google "Edward R. Hamilton Book Co". The glue that was talked about was called "E 9000" and can be found at various stores including Hobby Lobby and Lowe's. Also, it was mentioned if you want to put freezer paper through the printer for paper piecing you MUST use an inkjet printer. Inkjet printers do not use heat which can melt the wax on the freezer paper causing fatal damage to your printer!
Show 'n Tell was fabulous as always. Josie will post pics. Our program, "Basket of Techniques" is going well. There is a whole lot of learning going on. This program opens up your mind and gives you skills you never thought you would have. For those who were absent from the meeting shoot me an email and I will pull two techniques for you.
The last weekend in April, Jackie Cory will be teaching a weekend class at Home Harvest Retreat in Trenton, GA. I will get the specifics from her and post it. Also, Josie Dinwiddie is checking into a retreat weekend for our group. Life is good on retreat....eat, sleep, and quilt....ahhhh.

GreatFul Thread Art Quilters,
One week from today, February 27, is our monthly meeting. We will gather at 4:30 to fuse and cut shapes for the Children's Discovery Museum quilts. We will be making two quilts with the children that will hang in the museum during AQS week. Please remember to bring good quality, bright colored fabrics you are willing to donate for the quilts. Fat quarter size up to one yard lengths would be good amounts. Use your imagination when choosing fabrics. For example Robot Antennae fabric does not have to be just that but could be fabric that when cut out in the shape of an antennae looks like one. Colors and prints needed are as follows:
Batiks
Planet and moon fabric
Celestial atmosphere fabric
Green for leaves and stems
Fun flower fabric
Tree trunk fabric
Yellow window fabric
Cloud fabric
house fabric (brick, stone, wood)
Roof fabric
Robot fabric
Robot antennae fabric
Sailboat fabric
Dinosaur fabric and/or bones
Solid colors or fabric that read as solid such as bright reds, blues, greens, orange, purple, brown and black
Keep in mind that we will pick and choose through all the fabric brought in and what isn't needed will be sent back to your stash! We will need fabric for making the two quilts to hang and also fabric for the children to make a block at the museum and take home with them. Bring your fabric scissors for cutting and the larger size combination cutting/pressing mat if you have one. I will bring two irons, fusible, and ziplock bags. Thanks in advance to all who are able to there early. For those who cannot make it at 4:30, if we do not finish we will continue to work during the meeting so bring your fabric scissors just in case. Also, if you cannot be there early but would like to contribute fabric (and please do) drop me an email to arrange a pickup, send it with another member or drop if off at the Bernina Sew N Quilt Studio beforehand letting them know what it is for.
Remember to bring your February technique block for our program. If you were not there during January and need me to pull techniques from the basket, you still have plenty of time to get that accomplished. Give me a call (706.934.3761) and I will do it over the phone. I will NOT forget to bring the basket of techniques this month, I promise!
Do not forget to bring your Show n Tell, it's the icing on the cake! It will be fun to see what everyone did while "snowed in". We will not begin our business portion of the meeting until the regular starting time of 6:00.
