GreatFul Threads meeting Thursday night

This coming Thursday is our August meeting of GreatFul Threads. Bring your technique project and any Show n’ Tell you have been working on this summer.   I do hope everyone is back in town and getting settled in for a fantastic Fall lineup in the Chattanooga Valley.  If you have not signed up to work AQS, please do so before the day is out. If I’m not mistaken today is the deadline.

We have had some busy, busy members this year. Vista will have some wonderful news to share at the meeting. I could give it away but want her to tell you.  Jackie Cory will have an exhibit of her work at Reflections Gallery. Opening reception is this Thursday afternoon 4-7. Stop by and support her before our Thursday night meeting begins, it’s on the way.  Reflections Gallery is at 6922 Lee Hwy, near the intersection of Lee Hwy and Shallowford Rd. While there sign up for Jackie’s Sept. 6 class on “Altered Books” from  4:00 to 7:00. Jackie’s classes are always fun!

Be productive and I will see you Thursday night,

News of our members

Congratulations to Vista Mahan!  She has an art quilt that was juried into the exhibit “Wings” at the Jewish Cultural Center,  5461 N. Terrace Drive in Chattanooga.  The last day to view the exhibit is September 29. I believe the Center is closed Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Check out their website for hours.  Below is a picture of Vista’s quilt.

Vista is an inspiration to each of us. This is her second juried exhibit she’s been accepted to this year. Let’s each make a vow that we will  expand our creative comfort zone and enter something over the next 12 months.

AQS still needs volunteers, especially floor hostesses. It’s a simple job, you wear a cute apron, smile, offer information and ask people not to touch or take pictures.  You get in free and after your shift you get to look at quilts and visit vendors!!  Woohoo!!  Life is good.

Miriam Duncan’s father passed away during the month of August; his home was in Illinois. You might want to send Miriam a card, email or give her a call.  Her address and # is on the member list.

Don’t forget to sign up for the ALTERED BOOK CLASS that Jackie Cory is teaching. The class is at Reflections Gallery 6922 Lee Hwy. (near Shallowford Rd. intersection),  Saturday, September 6 from 2-5:00.  You can email Jackie for more info or get on Reflections Gallery website to see a picture of her altered books. I am signed up, let me know if you are taking it with me.

Wow, what happened to Summer 2014? I know summertime did not go this fast when I was a child!

We have our August GreatFul Threads meeting  in 18 days. If you would like to hang an art quilt(s) at the Children's Discovery Museum I will need it by Monday the 25th. (our meeting is that week on the 28th) If you are coming a long distance, like Miriam, I can meet you half way and get it from you so that you do not have to make the long drive twice in one week. You will need to have a sleeve on each of your quilts. It would also be helpful if it had a dowel in it to hang it with. If not, no worries, I will cut one to fit.

I hope each of you are working on your self portrait, due in October. If you are having difficulties getting started send me an email and we can get together and  work on it. This project is easier than it looks. When you see a caricature of someone, does it look like a photo of them?  No, it does not. Make it fun and whimsical.

If anyone needs a technique from the basket, send me an email and I will pull one for you. I am working on Sashiko this month and am trying to incorporate that into the house blocks I have worked on each month with this program. It is a challenge, and a fun one at that. I think you will agree,  concentrating on art lets my mind have a break from world events.
