August GT update
Thanks to all who attended the August meeting Thursday night, it was a very good meeting. A welcome to new member Marion Burris. Please do not confuse Marion with Miriam Duncan, although both are very talented.
We began the meeting by acknowledging Vista Mahan has had quilts accepted to the Needle and Thread exhibit that AVA is putting on September 6 - October 24. If possible make it to the opening day reception to congratulate her and maybe on on the gallery hop. Vista has had an exciting year with multiple quilts accepted to showings and write-ups of her and her work in various magazines.
Jackie Cory has an exhibit at Reflections Gallery near the corner of Lee Hwy and Shallowford Rd. Try to make it by there to see her work and sign up for an altered book class she is teaching this Saturday, September 6 at the gallery.
The quilts are up at the CDM and they look spectacular. I do hope everyone has September 11 on the calendar. This is the CDM reception and yes, I know that is during quilt week and yes it's going to be a red eye week but please make a point to drop in, whether you have a quilt hanging or not to show support for the museum and our group. The time is 6-7:30 (the meeting agenda said 7:00 but that was a mistake).
Due to our members being stretched tighter than size 3 leggings on the Fat Lady at a Barnum and Bailey Circus, we have tabled the grant money opportunity until after AQS.
I brought up the fact that I think we need to have new leaders for next year.(notice it said leaders and not leader) Our numbers have been down this year and it might be contributed to a need for fresh faces at the head of the table. Josie offered to be official blog photographer, thank you Josie, that's a start. This will be discussed again in September.
We set a temporary date of Friday, November 6 for a field trip to Yates Bleachery in Flintstone, GA and then to the Samaritan Thrift store in Ooltewah. We can stop for lunch in between and make it a fun day. Keep in mind we do not meet in November and December due to the 4th Thursday falling so close to Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Show 'n Tell was combined with the basket techniques program. We shared information and experience. Our main purpose in this group is to learn and I personally have learned something new at every meeting I have ever attended.
For those who could not attend let me know and I will pull next months technique for you. This month I had Shashiko and it was harder than I thought but turned out really well. Did you know learning something new on a regular basis aids the body in preventing dementia and other memory lost diseases?
Any questions? Please send me an email or text.
Quilting is better for your brain than housework,
Denise
